Alabama State University Online Master’s in Counseling

Alabama State University is a public, historically Black university offering online graduate counseling options, including the master of education (MEd) in school counseling and the master of science (MS) in rehabilitation counseling. Both programs are designed to prepare professional counselors to serve diverse populations in school and rehabilitation settings through a mix of counseling theory, practical skills, and supervised clinical experiences.

Both online counseling programs are structured for flexibility, with asynchronous and synchronous coursework and no required campus visits. Each program totals 60 credits and can typically be completed in about two to 2.5 years full-time or three to four years part-time. Students in both tracks complete at least 100 hours of practicum and 600 hours of internship, building skills in counseling techniques, assessment, multicultural issues, and ethical practice.

The MEd in school counseling is a 60-credit, CACREP-accredited program that trains students in the ASCA National Model with a focus on program development, implementation, and evaluation in K-12 schools. The curriculum blends instructional support courses such as introduction to counseling; theories & techniques of individual counseling; and elementary school counseling with counseling research and foundation courses like counseling across the lifespan. Students complete a 100-hour counseling practicum and two internships totaling 600 clinical hours at elementary, middle, and high schools, all delivered fully online with no campus visits required.

The MS in rehabilitation counseling is a 60-credit, five-semester program that prepares students to work with individuals with physical, developmental, cognitive, and emotional disabilities toward personal, career, and independent living goals. The program emphasizes techniques such as assessment and appraisal, diagnosis and treatment planning, case management, and interventions to remove environmental and attitudinal barriers, with key courses like foundations of rehabilitation counseling; medical aspects of disability; and case management in rehabilitation counseling. Students complete a 100-hour rehabilitation practicum and a 600-hour rehabilitation internship in integrated settings, entirely online with no required campus visits.

Admission to Alabama State University’s online counseling master’s programs follows graduate admissions standards that include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Applicants submit a completed application, GRE or MAT test scores, official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, a resume, three professional letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose describing their objectives and relevant academic or employment experiences. The MRC program also requires a written personal statement demonstrating a clear interest in rehabilitation counseling and readiness for professional growth.

Alabama State University is located in Montgomery, Alabama, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Both the master of education in school counseling program and the master of science in rehabilitation counseling program are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
