Albany State University Online Counseling Programs

Albany State University is a public historically black university offering online master of education programs in counselor education. The available concentrations include clinical mental health counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, and school counseling, each designed to train professional counselors for diverse career paths in mental health, rehabilitation, and education.

The 60-credit online counselor education program includes a 48-credit core curriculum across all concentrations that can be completed in 2.5 years accelerated full-time, three years standard full-time, or over four years part-time. All tracks require 700 hours of clinical fieldwork through practicum and internships, two four-day on-campus residencies, preparation for the National Counselor Examination, and a focus on professional identity, multicultural competence, advocacy, and ethical practice.

The MEd in counselor education with a concentration in clinical mental health counseling prepares students to treat mental illness, address life challenges, and promote wellness through flexible therapy for individuals, families, and groups. It qualifies graduates as nationally certified counselors (NCC) and licensed professional counselors (LPC), featuring concentration courses like introduction to mental health counseling; diagnosis and treatment; and addiction counseling.

The clinical rehabilitation counseling concentration trains counselors to help individuals with disabilities achieve personal, career, and independent living goals through assessment, case management, and advocacy. Graduates pursue certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC) and LPC credentials, with specialized courses such as foundations of rehabilitation counseling; medical and psychosocial aspects of disability; and vocational development and placement.

The school counseling concentration equips students to support K-12 academic, career, and social-emotional development using the National School Counseling Model, with two required four-day residencies. It prepares graduates for NCC and nationally certified school counselor (NCSC) certification through courses including school counseling foundations; counseling children and adolescents; and school counseling P-12.

Admission to the counselor education program requires application to Albany State University Graduate School during summer or fall cohorts, with supporting materials including a counselor education program application form, professional statement instructions, three current references, and GRE scores. Regular admission needs a 2.8 undergraduate GPA from a regionally accredited institution; provisional admission allows a 2.5 GPA or higher. Selected applicants will interview with the Counselor Education Admissions Committee, which considers GPA, test scores, references, experience, and professional goals.
