Amridge University Online Counseling & MFT Programs
Amridge University is a private Christian university affiliated with the Churches of Christ, offering fully online graduate counseling and ministry programs that integrate biblical study, psychology, and clinical training. Its counseling and marriage and family therapy options include the MA in marriage and family therapy, MA in professional counseling, master of divinity (MDiv) in marriage and family therapy, and MDiv in professional counseling, all designed to prepare graduates for licensure and service in church, community, and agency settings.
Across these programs, students build foundations in counseling theory, scientific research, and supervised clinical practice while developing sensitivity to cultural diversity and ethical and professional standards. Practicum and clinical training are completed at approved local sites under licensed supervision, with students responsible for arranging their placements several semesters in advance. All clinical courses require face-to-face, on-site client work and concurrent supervision, typically over a full year of training.
The MA in marriage and family therapy is a 60-credit professional degree focused on systemic therapy with individuals, couples, and families. Students take courses such as theories of marriage and family therapy; interpersonal and family dynamics; and assessment of individuals and families, and must complete at least 600 face-to-face clinical hours, including 500 client-contact hours and 100 hours of supervision, preparing for marriage and family therapy licensure and roles in settings like community mental health centers, social service agencies, and private practice.
The MA in professional counseling is a 60-credit program centered on therapeutic work with individuals and groups in church, private practice, and agency environments. Coursework includes group counseling; lifestyle and career development; and psychopathology and psychopharmacology, while clinical training requires a minimum of 700 total hours, with at least 280 direct client-contact hours and 105 hours of supervision, supporting professional counseling licensure preparation.
The MDiv in marriage and family therapy is a 96-credit professional ministry degree that combines at least 36 hours of Bible and divinity courses, such as hermeneutics and homiletics, with 60 hours of marriage and family therapy coursework, like social and multicultural diversity and systemic treatment of substance-related disorders. Students complete at least 600 face-to-face clinical hours (500 client-contact, 100 supervision), equipping them for LMFT licensure and therapeutic ministry with families and couples.
The MDiv in professional counseling is a 96-credit program blending theological preparation through courses like spiritual leadership and critical introduction to the new testament with 60 credits of professional counseling courses, including advanced therapy; basic counseling techniques/helping relationships; and PC ethics and professional identity. Clinical training requires at least 700 total hours, with 280 direct client-contact hours and 105 supervised hours, supporting Licensed Professional Counselor pathways within ministry contexts.
Admission to any of the master’s programs requires an application with a fee and an official transcript showing completion of a four-year BA or BS from a regionally or nationally accredited institution. The MA programs may be completed in about seven semesters full-time or part-time, while the MDiv degrees can typically be finished in about three years on either a full-time or part-time basis.
