Angelo State University Online Counseling & LPC Bridge Programs
Angelo State University is a public university offering flexible online counseling programs through its Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Available options include the master of education (MEd) in school counseling program, the master of arts (MA) in mental health and wellness counseling program (non-licensure), the master of arts in professional counseling program, the mental health and wellness counseling: online LPC bridge program (licensure only), the school counseling: online LPC bridge program, and the Texas school counselor certification program.
All programs deliver courses 100 percent online in eight-week formats, five times per year for working professionals, emphasizing practical skills in counseling theories, ethics, cultural influences, crisis intervention, and human development. While primarily asynchronous, clinical programs require students to secure local practicum or internship sites with approved supervisors. Angelo State faculty provide hands-on support and preparation for Texas licensure exams, such as the TExES, as well as state behavioral health requirements.
The MEd in school counseling is a 48-credit program aligned with Texas comprehensive school counseling models that prepares graduates to support students’ academic, career, and social-emotional growth. Key courses include the role of the school counselor; comprehensive school counseling programs; practicum in school counseling or internship in school counseling; and individual counseling, with on-site practicum or internship experiences leading to Texas School Counselor Certificate exam eligibility.
The MA in mental health and wellness counseling (non-licensure) comprises 30 credits as a foundation for ethical counseling in various fields without leading to licensure. It covers social and cultural influences; theories of counseling; group counseling; capstone in mental health and wellness counseling; and introduction to crisis, trauma, and mental health concerns for versatile professional application.
The MA in professional counseling totals 60 credits to meet Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) academic requirements through asynchronous online study. Students complete counseling practicum I and II; counseling ethics; psychopathology and psychopharmacology; marriage and family counseling; and capstone in professional counseling, followed by state-approved in-person internships for full licensure.
The mental health and wellness counseling: online LPC bridge provides 30 credits specifically for those with prior counseling master’s degrees seeking Texas LPC licensure. Bridge courses include career and occupational counseling; assessment techniques; counseling practicum I and II; counseling ethics; and psychopathology, requiring students to arrange local practicum sites and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisors (LPC-S).
The school counseling: online LPC bridge offers 18 credits for school counselors pursuing Texas LPC licensure, covering assessment techniques; addictions counseling; counseling ethics; marriage and family counseling; and psychopathology. Students secure their own practicum sites and LPC-S supervisors to fulfill state LPC-A requirements in addition to their school counseling credentials.
The Texas school counselor certification is an 18-credit non-degree program for those with a 48-hour counseling master’s, preparing for the TExES School Counselor exam. It includes individual counseling; group counseling; role of the school counselor; comprehensive school counseling programs; and practicum or internship in school counseling, delivered fully online except for required field experiences.
Admission to degree programs such as MEd school counseling, MA mental health and wellness counseling, and MA professional counseling requires official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a 2.75 overall or last-60-hour undergraduate GPA, with no GRE required. Bridge programs and Texas school counselor certification accept applicants with relevant master’s degrees in counseling (48-hour minimum for certification) and transcripts, while certification also requires Texas Education Agency screening.
Angelo State University is located in San Angelo, Texas, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The university is approved by the Texas Education Agency to recommend candidates for state educator certifications, including Texas School Counselor Certification, and supports Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure pathways through its counseling programs.

Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. Rates may change, so please check here for the latest tuition information. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students. “Resident” and “non-resident” refer to the student’s school-recognized state residency status. Tuition number represents the cost of tuition for the entire program, not per semester or year. Estimated total tuition does not include additional fees.
