Programs emphasize social justice, multicultural competence, ethical practice, and transformative counseling through CACREP-aligned curriculum covering professional orientation, diversity, human growth, career development, helping relationships, group work, assessment, and research. Delivery includes online asynchronous or synchronous courses, residencies (one to three week-long intensives for skill practice), and fieldwork (over 700 hours of practicum or internship at approved sites). Full-time master’s degrees take three to 3.5 years or 28 to 40 months; PhDs take three to five years; while certificates take around 12 months.
The 15-credit certificate in addiction studies requires 15 months to complete and trains students for the Washington SUDP alternative path with courses like survey of addiction; psychopharmacology & physiology of addiction; substance use disorder law & ethics; advanced clinical skills for addiction counseling; and treatment of addiction.
The 60-credit MA in clinical mental health counseling takes 40 months to complete. The program helps students build core counseling skills through residencies and 700 hours of fieldwork. Concentrations in this program include addictions counseling (60 credits; courses include psychopharmacology, process addictions, and addictions counseling), art therapy (66 credits; courses include developmental & trauma informed art therapy, techniques and practices of art therapy, and art therapy assessment), drama therapy (66 credits; courses include ethics and professional issues in drama therapy and drama therapy with special populations), and neurodiversity (60 credits; courses include understanding and supporting diverse learners and academic and cognitive supports for autistic students).

The 60-credit MA in couple & family therapy takes 28 months to complete and focuses on psychotherapy and family systems. Courses include family systems perspectives; applied couples and relational therapy; and CFT identity, law, and ethics. 500 hours of internship are also required.

The nine-credit post-master’s certificate in trauma counseling includes courses such as counseling approaches to trauma, grief, and loss; trauma and resiliency; and creative approaches to trauma-informed practice.
Finally, the clinical mental health counseling: addictions counseling post-master’s certificate comprises 12 credits that educates and trains students and practicing professionals in substance abuse counseling. Courses include integrated approaches to addiction counseling; family counseling approaches to addictions; and psychopharmacology.
Admissions across Antioch’s counseling programs follow a similar, straightforward pattern. Most master’s programs, including clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, couple & family therapy, dance/movement therapy, and their concentrations, require an online application, a resume or CV, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities where students earned their degree, with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Post-master’s and certificate programs such as addiction studies, couple & family therapy, latinx mental health counseling, school counseling certificate, trauma counseling, and clinical mental health counseling: addictions counseling require that students are currently enrolled in, or have already completed, a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, plus official graduate transcripts and, if applicable, a copy of their current license.
Doctoral programs add a few extra expectations. The PhD in counselor education & supervision requires a completed clinical master’s degree in counseling or a closely related mental health field, submission of all official graduate transcripts, a current resume or CV, and a written admission essay or personal statement. Applicants must be license-eligible and prepared to address any missing CACREP- or COAMFTE-related coursework within their doctoral plan.
Antioch University, based in Keene, New Hampshire, with multiple campuses across the country, holds institutional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Key programs like the MA in clinical mental health counseling (all concentrations) and school counseling are CACREP-accredited or aligned; couple & family therapy programs (MA and PhD) carry COAMFTE accreditation; art therapy is CAAHEP-accredited; dance/movement therapy meets ADTA approval standards; and the PhD in counselor education & supervision is CACREP-accredited. These credentials support pathways to state licensure such as LMHC, LMFT, SUDP, ATR, R-DMT, and BC-DMT.

Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. Rates may change, so please check here for the latest tuition information. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students. “Resident” and “non-resident” refer to the student’s school-recognized state residency status. Tuition number represents the cost of tuition for the entire program, not per semester or year. Estimated total tuition does not include additional fees.
