Belmont University Online MS in School Counseling
Belmont University offers an online MA in mental health counseling with a school counseling track, a 60-credit program that prepares students for Tennessee school counselor licensure in pre-K-12 public or private schools. The track combines Christian perspectives on counseling with practical skills for ethical, diverse, and holistic client care.
The program requires 700 clock hours of field experience through a practicum and two internships, typically started after 24 semester hours, with a pre-practicum observation class in the first year for school counseling students. It emphasizes ethical issue resolution, multicultural strategies, human development, efficacious counseling techniques, assessment, research, and spiritual integration in practice. Students can finish in two years by taking 12 credits each fall and spring and six in summer. All students will be required to pass background checks and show proof of professional liability insurance before clinicals.
Key school counseling courses include foundations of school counseling; pre-practicum in school counseling; ethics or evaluation in school counseling; contemporary issues in education; and multicultural classroom management. These build on shared foundational classes like techniques of counseling & psychotherapy; diagnosis & treatment of mental disorders; and diversity & social justice in the clinical encounter.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college, an application with an essay on professional interests, two letters of recommendation, an interview with faculty, a curriculum vitae or resume, official transcripts, English proficiency, and a graduate application fee. School counseling applicants must pass a background check and submit fingerprints before admission. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with provisional admission possible after 96 undergraduate credits. Up to 21 transfer credits may be accepted if they meet CACREP standards.
