Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis Counseling Program

The Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis offers a master of arts in clinical mental health counseling, a 64-credit program that can be completed full-time in two to three years or part-time over multiple semesters. This psychodynamic-focused training prepares students for licensure as mental health counselors in Massachusetts and many states, with skills to treat diverse patients, including those with psychosis or addictions.

The program blends counseling theories, psychoanalytic foundations, human development, psychopathology, assessment, diagnosis, ethics, and research, with 400 hours of fieldwork practicum (100 hours for licensure) and 600 hours of internship in settings such as clinics, schools, or substance abuse programs. Students complete 70 hours of personal training analysis, 120 hours of group supervision, and 30 hours of individual supervision, plus a clinical paper and case presentation. Small classes emphasize practical application through emotional self-awareness and the observation of unconscious dynamics in clients.

Key courses include psychoanalytic theory; psychopathology; theories of counseling; fieldwork seminar: clinical techniques; and dreams, fantasy, and symbolic communication. Specializations in child and adolescent intervention or addictions counseling add focused coursework and internships for LADC eligibility or work with youth.

Admission requires a baccalaureate degree from an approved institution, transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a writing sample to show academic readiness. Applicants demonstrate motivation, self-understanding, and openness to unconscious processes through a personal statement and three faculty interviews, including a spontaneous response to psychoanalytic text. International students need TOEFL or IELTS scores. The school evaluates English proficiency and offers writing support if needed.

Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis is a private institution founded in 1973 with its main campus in Brookline, Massachusetts, and locations in New York and New Jersey. It is regionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).
