Doane University Online MEd – School Counseling

Doane University offers a master of education (MEd) in school counseling that prepares students to become ethical, data-informed school counselors. The program is designed for students who want to work in K-12 settings and build strong skills in advocacy, collaboration, leadership, and systemic change.

The program is grounded in the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) National Model and focuses on academic, social, emotional, and career development. Students learn through rigorous coursework, reflective practice, field experience, and authentic assessment. The curriculum covers school counseling theories, counseling skills, social justice, human development, data interpretation, group counseling, programming, and ethics. Students complete an approved practicum of at least 100 hours in a school setting and an internship of 450 hours, both with supervision and formal evaluation, so they can apply what they learn in real educational environments.

This graduate program prepares future school counselors to support diverse learners and communities with culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate strategies. Students without a teaching certificate complete 60 credits, while those with a teaching certificate complete 48 credits. Key courses include introduction to school counseling; counseling theories and methods for K-12 schools; interpreting data in school counseling; diverse populations in school settings: social-emotional development and mental health; social and cultural awareness in school counseling; and practicum in counseling. The program emphasizes comprehensive school counseling programming, collaboration with school stakeholders, and the use of the ASCA framework.

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. They must submit an online application, official transcripts, an essay explaining their reason for selecting the program and their philosophy of education, leadership, and advocacy, and three letters of recommendation, including one from an administrator or supervisor. Applicants must also complete an interview and receive approval from the Program Director. Students with a current Nebraska teaching certificate must provide a copy of that certificate.
