Edgewood University Online MA in Art Therapy & Counseling
Edgewood University offers a master of arts program in art therapy and counseling for students who want to study art therapy and clinical mental health counseling together. The program is designed to prepare graduates for professional practice, licensure, and work with individuals, families, and communities.
The program combines art making, counseling theory, and clinical training in a blended format. Students complete 60 credits, attend two in-person residencies in Madison, Wisconsin, and take part in clinical placements that include a practicum and two internships. The program also uses small class sizes, studio access, and a cohort-based learning model.
This 60-credit hybrid program prepares students for entry-level licensure in art therapy and professional counseling. It focuses on using art making as part of holistic assessment, healing, and growth. Important courses include history and foundations of art therapy; techniques, skills, and materials; psychopathology; mental health assessment; and crisis intervention and trauma.
Students study in an interactive cohort and have access to studio facilities in Madison, Wisconsin. The program includes two required residencies each year, one in August and one in April, and students must attend at least one residency per year. Clinical training includes a practicum with at least 100 on-site hours and two internships with 300 hours each.
Applicants must provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree in a counseling or counseling-related field, official transcripts, a completed graduate application, three professional references, a 300 to 500-word essay, and a professional resume. Students must also complete a criminal record background check by the end of the first semester. Up to 15 semester credits of graduate credit may be considered for transfer, if approved by the department.
