Fort Hays State University Online Master’s in Counseling Program

Fort Hays State University offers an online master of science in counseling with a school counseling focus, designed to prepare students for counseling careers through flexible online study, practical training, and professional preparation.

The program focuses on counseling theory, ethics, research, assessment, human development, and hands-on field experience. Students complete practicum and internship requirements. The school counseling program emphasizes school-based practice and the ASCA framework. 

The MS in school counseling is a 60-credit fully online program that prepares students for licensure as professional school counselors (PSC). It focuses on school-based counseling, student support, and program development. Important foundational courses include foundations of counseling; the school counseling profession; management of counseling programs; and internship in school counseling.

Other courses include research and evaluation in counseling; lifespan human development; counseling skills development; lifestyle and career development; group counseling; and social and cultural foundations of counseling. It also requires a practicum in either elementary or secondary counseling as well as two school counseling internships. The school counseling program also includes a comprehensive examination.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree, submit a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, a background check, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. Both programs expect applicants to demonstrate readiness for graduate study and commitment to the counseling field.

It is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and programmatically accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
