Fort Valley State University Online Master’s & EdS in Counseling

Fort Valley State University offers three online counseling-related programs: an EdS in school counselor education specialist, a master of science (MS) in clinical rehabilitation counseling, and a master of science in education (MSEd) in school counselor education. These programs are designed to prepare students for counseling and school-based roles through flexible study, practical training, and professional preparation.

The programs share a strong focus on counseling skills, research, ethics, field experience, and service to diverse communities. Students in the school counseling programs complete clinical field experiences, action research, and coursework that support school-based practice. The rehabilitation counseling program also includes practicum and internship experiences and prepares students to work with people with disabilities in many settings. Across the programs, FVSU emphasizes leadership, professional growth, and preparation for work in schools and community settings.

The fully online school counselor education specialist program comprises 30 credits and is designed for practicing school counselors who want to refine their skills and move into leadership roles. It meets the educational requirements for the professional school counselor certificate, level 6. Important courses include a seminar in social issues and comparative education, using the SPSS statistical package, clinical supervision, and an advanced seminar in counseling theories.

The MS in clinical rehabilitation counseling is a 61-credit fully online program that prepares students to support people with physical, mental, developmental, or emotional disabilities. It focuses on rehabilitation services, counseling techniques, case management, and vocational support. Important courses include human growth and development; counseling theories and process; introduction to rehabilitation; and vocational rehabilitation.

The MSEd in school counselor education is a 60-credit program that prepares students for school counseling roles in primary, elementary, middle, and high school settings. It includes online study, field experience, and a capstone research project. Important courses include introduction to school counseling; counseling theories and process; comprehensive school counseling, and school counseling internship.

The school counseling programs include courses such as human growth and development; career and lifestyle development; group theory and process; ethics and law; counseling children and adolescents; and research and program evaluation. The EdS and MSEd programs both require practicum, internship, and an action research project. The rehabilitation counseling program includes practicum and internship in rehabilitation, along with core courses in diagnosis, multicultural counseling, and case management.

For the EdS program, applicants must hold a graduate degree in a related counseling field from a regionally accredited institution, have a renewable S-5 certificate in school counseling in Georgia, and complete a background check in the first semester.

For the MSEd program, applicants need an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution, a GPA of 2.75 or better, three recommendations, a resume, a personal statement, and passing GACE basic skills assessments.

For the MS in clinical rehabilitation counseling program, applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution, follow the general requirements for admission to graduate study, have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.7, and complete a formal interview, either face-to-face or by phone.
