Franklin Pierce University Online Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Franklin Pierce University offers one online counseling program: a master of arts in clinical mental health counseling. The program is designed for students seeking flexible study, clinical training, and preparation for careers in mental health counseling.
The program blends online learning with two five-day in-person intensives in New Hampshire and 48 weeks of clinical work, giving students both academic study and hands-on training. It also includes practicum and internship experiences, faculty support, and a cohort-style learning model. Students learn counseling theory, diagnosis, ethics, assessment, and applied clinical skills. The program is built to help students work with individuals, couples, families, and groups in a wide range of mental health settings.
The MA in clinical mental health counseling is a 24-month program that totals 60 credits. It prepares students for professional counseling work and supports licensure goals in New Hampshire. Important courses include orientation to the counseling profession; theories of counseling and psychotherapy; mental health diagnosis; counseling families; and career development and life planning.
Other courses in the curriculum include skills and techniques in counseling; multicultural counseling; counseling ethics; group process and dynamics; crisis, trauma theory, and counseling; and applied research methods for counselors. Students complete a Practicum, three Internships, along with in-person clinical rotations and on-site immersions. The program also uses live discussion, case work, simulations, and other online learning tools.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They must also submit three letters of recommendation, a 250 to 500-word essay on career goals, an interview with the Program Director, and a current resume or CV. Students should contact the relevant state licensing board if they plan to pursue licensure outside New Hampshire.
