Geneva College Online MA in Counseling Programs
Geneva College offers an online master of arts in counseling with three concentration options: clinical mental health counseling, marriage, couple, and family counseling, and school counseling. The program is designed for students who want a Christian counseling education that can fit into their lives while preparing them for professional practice.
All three concentrations share a common counseling foundation and include a mix of online study and a one-time residency experience. The online format combines flexible coursework with live sessions, while the residency gives students a chance to meet on campus, complete a professional issues and ethics course, and connect with faculty and classmates. Students also complete supervised practicum and internship experiences in their own communities.
All three counseling concentrations require the completion of 60 credits of coursework. Core courses include foundations for faith-based counseling; Christian counseling within the mental health profession; counseling theory; counseling skills; child and adolescent counseling skills; social and cultural foundations of counseling; and group counseling.
The clinical mental health counseling concentration prepares students for work in mental health settings and focuses on counseling skills, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychopharmacology. It is designed to help students develop the knowledge and experience needed for professional counseling practice. The program emphasizes a broad view of human wellness that includes spiritual, social, psychological, and physical aspects of life. Courses in this concentration include psychopharmacology; and professional issues and ethics in mental health counseling.
The marriage, couple, and family counseling concentration focuses on counseling individuals, couples, and families through a family systems approach. Students study the history and philosophy of marriage and family counseling and build skills for working with relational systems in diverse settings. The concentration also highlights group counseling and prepares students for professional counseling roles, with additional state requirements needed for licensure as a marriage and family therapist. Courses include family counseling; marital and couple counseling; foundations of marriage, couple, and family counseling; and professional issues and ethics in marriage, couple, and family counseling.
The school counseling concentration is designed to prepare students to support the academic, career, and personal and social development of P-12 students. Coursework includes counseling children and adolescents; organization & management of school counseling programs; curriculum, learning, inclusion, and instruction for school counselors; and professional issues and ethics in school counseling. This concentration is offered fully online and includes both elementary and secondary school counseling internship experiences.
Admission requirements include a completed application, official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree, a resume, an essay of purpose, three recommendations, and an interview. Applicants are expected to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0, though lower GPAs may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and provisional admission may be possible. GRE or GMAT scores are not required, but a graduate test score may be needed after review of undergraduate coursework.
