George Fox University Online Master’s in Counseling Programs

George Fox University offers two online master’s programs in counseling: master of arts in clinical mental health counseling and master of arts in marriage, couple, and family counseling. Both programs are designed for students who want a flexible format, strong faculty support, and a Christian learning environment.

Both counseling degrees share a similar structure and focus on practical training, personal growth, and professional preparation. Students can study online or in person, and both programs include field placements, live feedback, and a cohort-style learning experience. George Fox also emphasizes whole-person care, meaning students learn to consider the spiritual, emotional, social, and relational needs of the people they will serve. Both programs include a practicum and three internships.

The master of arts in clinical mental health counseling program prepares students for work in mental health settings and for licensure in Oregon. It includes counseling core courses, spiritual integration, electives, and supervised field placement. Important courses include introduction to systems theory and practice; advanced clinical skills; psychopathology and appraisal; treatment planning; sexual issues in the clinical setting; introduction to trauma-informed practice; group theory & therapy; and addictions.

The master of arts in marriage, couple, and family counseling program prepares students to work with individuals, couples, and families and offers a dual licensure path. Students study counseling core courses, marriage and family specialization courses, and supervised field placement. Important courses include couple therapy; family therapy; introduction to systems theory and practice; sexual issues in the clinical setting; and play therapy: lifespan applications.

Admission requirements include a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, a completed online application, two recommendations, a short essay, and a professional resume. Standardized test scores are not required. The bachelor’s degree does not need to be in psychology.
