Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Online MA in Counseling
Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary offers two online counseling programs: the master of arts in Christian counseling clinical mental health and the master of arts in counseling. These programs are based at the seminary’s Charlotte and Hamilton campuses and give students flexible options for counseling study with Christian integration.
Both degrees focus on preparing students for professional counseling work with a strong foundation in faith, ethics, and clinical practice. Students can study in digital live or hybrid formats, and both programs include real-time classes, practical training, and annual in-person residency experiences. The seminary also emphasizes integration, diversity, and whole-person care in both programs.
The master of arts in Christian counseling clinical mental health is a 66-credit program that can be completed in two years full-time or three to four years part-time. It is offered on the Charlotte campus or primarily online, and classes are held in the evenings and on weekends. Students also complete supervised practicum and internship experiences in their local area, and the program includes a three-day campus residency each year, along with two clinical skills classes that require one weekend of in-person participation.
The program includes Bible, theology, and counseling courses such as professional standards & Christian ethics for counselors; advanced Christian counseling models & practice; counseling for crisis & addiction; multicultural diversity in counseling; advanced trauma counseling: diagnosis & treatment; global mental health; and exploring the Old and New Testaments.
The master of arts in counseling is a 72-credit program that can be completed in three years full-time or four to seven years part-time. It is offered on the Hamilton campus or primarily online, and students attend three in-person residencies on the Hamilton campus across the program. The curriculum includes courses such as lifespan development; research methods and design; psychopathology; group process; aging, death, and end-of-life medical ethics; and theology for counselors, along with practicum, internship, and residency and lab requirements.
Admission requirements for both programs include an undergraduate or prior graduate degree, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, a vocational goal that fits the program, transcripts, a resume, essays, recommendations, and a faculty interview. International students must also meet English language requirements. For the master of arts in counseling, applicants are recommended to have at least 9 semester hours in psychology or related disciplines, though life experience may also be considered. MACO applicants also must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and North Carolina and Florida residents cannot enroll in the primarily online format.
