Gwynedd Mercy University offers four counseling pathways: an online master of science in clinical mental health counseling, an online master of science in school counseling, an online school counseling certification program for Pre K-12, and a post-graduate clinical mental health certificate. These options are designed for students who want flexible online study, field experience, and preparation for counseling and school-based careers.

Both master’s programs include online coursework, a three-day on-campus residency, 100 practicum hours, 600 internship hours, and fieldwork that helps students connect classroom learning to real counseling practice. Core courses in MS programs include counseling skills; human development; foundations of counseling; research methods; practicum; theories in counseling; assessment techniques in counseling; social justice, multicultural & diversity issues in counseling; career development; group counseling and facilitation skills; ethics and legal issues in counseling; and special topics residency.
The online MS in clinical mental health counseling prepares students for work in community mental health and related settings. It includes core courses, clinical training, and the shared residency and fieldwork requirements, with topics such as counseling agencies; psychopathology; marriage and family counseling; and substance use. Students complete practicum and internship work and receive preparation for licensure in Pennsylvania.
The online MS in school counseling prepares students for certification as K-12 school counselors in Pennsylvania. The program includes courses such as disabilities in the school counseling setting; needs of english language learners in the school counseling setting; intervention of techniques of school counseling; organization of school counseling; and child and adolescent. Students also complete the shared three-day residency, 100 practicum hours, and 600 internship hours.
The online school counseling certification program for Pre K-12 is designed for master’s degree holders who want to meet Pennsylvania certification requirements. It is delivered online in accelerated seven-week blocks and includes 510 hours of in-person field experience. The program prepares students to support children and teenagers through academic, career, and social emotional counseling.
The post graduate clinical mental health certificate is for graduates of Gwynedd Mercy University’s master in school counseling program. It requires 12 credits, including a 200-hour internship in a clinical mental health setting, and helps students complete the credits needed to sit for the NCE and pursue licensure as a professional counselor.
Admission requirements vary by program but generally include a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited institution, official transcripts, a minimum GPA, a personal statement or writing sample, letters of recommendation, and a group interview. The graduate counseling programs also require prerequisite coursework in general psychology and research methods or statistics. For the school counseling certification program, applicants must already hold a master’s degree and provide supervisory references, while the post graduate clinical mental health certificate is intended for graduates of Gwynedd Mercy University’s master in school counseling program.
