Jackson State University offers an education specialist degree with a concentration in school counseling. The program is designed for students who want to build advanced counseling skills, earn school counseling certification, and strengthen their professional practice.
The program focuses on preparing students for careers in professional counseling and related school-based roles. It also supports students who want to upgrade their certification or skill level in counseling.
The education specialist program requires 42 semester-hours, a thesis, and a passing score on the graduate comprehensive examination. Students are encouraged to take advanced research and independent study with their advisor. The coursework includes advanced research and statistics; school and community relations; introduction to professional counseling; principles and techniques of counseling; a practicum in supervised experience and consulting; a seminar in counseling; and an internship in school counseling.
A separate track is available for students holding an AA educator license in guidance and counseling. This version requires 33 credits and includes courses such as advanced research and statistics; advanced research and independent study; counselor supervision and theories; counseling children; and an internship in school counseling.
Admission requirements include a master’s degree from an accredited college or university, an overall GPA of 3.0 or above on the master’s degree, a completed specialist program application, three letters of recommendation, a writing sample, a successful interview, a recommendation from the screening committee, and a valid teaching license.
