John Carroll University Online Counseling Programs
John Carroll University offers two online counseling options: the master of arts in clinical mental health counseling and the substance use disorder counseling certificate. Both programs are designed for students seeking focused graduate training in counseling and field experience.
The university’s counseling programs emphasize practical learning, licensure preparation, and work with real clients in the field. The master’s program includes more than 700 hours of clinical experience, while the certificate program is designed as a fast, flexible option for students seeking chemical dependency counseling preparation.
The online master of arts in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit program that prepares students for professional licensure and counseling careers. It includes core academic courses, clinical sequence courses, and field experience. Important courses include orientation to counseling; counseling theories; counseling techniques and practice; clinical diagnosis and psychopathology; diversity issues in counseling; foundations of school counseling; crisis and trauma in schools; family and relationship dynamics in counseling; and clinical mental health counseling practicum and internship.
The substance use disorder counseling certificate is an eight-month online program that can be completed for graduate credit, no credit, or continuing education credit. It is designed for students seeking licensure or additional preparation in chemical dependency counseling. Key coursework includes addiction knowledge; treatment knowledge for chemical dependency and addictive disorders; service coordination and documentation; group and individual counseling; family and relationship dynamics; and field experience in chemical dependency and addictive disorders.
Admission requirements for the master’s program include an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, a minimum 3.0 GPA, an online application, official transcripts, a resume or CV, two letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and a faculty interview. The certificate program requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited institution; a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 for applicants without a master’s degree; official transcripts; letters of recommendation; a statement of purpose; and an interview with the program coordinator.
John Carroll University is in University Heights, Ohio, near Cleveland. It is a private Jesuit university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and the online master’s in clinical mental health counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
