Kansas State University Online Counseling Programs: Bachelor’s & PhD

Kansas State University offers three online counseling-related options: the bachelor of science (BS) in addiction counseling, the education specialist (EdS) in school counseling, and a PhD in counselor education and supervision. These programs serve students at different academic levels, from entry-level counseling training to advanced doctoral study.

All three programs are built around professional counseling preparation, practical learning, and licensure-related goals. The bachelor’s program focuses on addiction counseling skills, the EdS prepares school counselors for P-12 settings, and the PhD develops leadership, supervision, teaching, and research skills for counselor education.

The BS in addiction counseling is a 120-credit fully online program that prepares students to assess substance use disorders and provide rehabilitation services. It includes courses such as introduction to addiction; professional, ethical, and legal issues in counseling; addiction and family; addiction pharmacology; and methods of group counseling. Graduates are eligible to sit for the licensing exam for addiction counselors in Kansas.

The education specialist (EdS) in school counseling is a 60-credit post-baccalaureate program that prepares students for comprehensive school counseling in academic, career, and social-emotional areas. It includes courses such as mental health in schools; counseling adolescents; counseling program management; leadership, advocacy, and consultation for counselors; and counseling internship. The program also includes practicum and internship work in approved school settings.

The PhD in counselor education and supervision is a 96-credit, fully online post-baccalaureate program. It is designed for students who want careers in counselor education, supervision, teaching, leadership, research, and advanced counseling practice. The curriculum includes courses such as multicultural and social justice issues in counselor education; teaching and learning in counselor education; leadership and advocacy in counselor education and supervision; qualitative research in education; and advanced counseling practicum.

Admission requirements differ by program. The bachelor’s degree in addiction counseling requires students to meet general university admission requirements. The EdS in school counseling requires a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA in the final two years, while the PhD requires a completed graduate application, fee, transcripts, statement of goals and experience, letters of recommendation, a resume, an interview, and English language proficiency. Both the EdS and PhD programs also require additional application materials and faculty review.

Kansas State University is a public land-grant research university in Manhattan, Kansas, and it is governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. The university is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and has offered distance education for more than 50 years. The school counseling EdS and the PhD in counselor education and supervision are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the university continues to expand its online programs through K-State Online.
