Lehman College CUNY Online Master’s in Counseling

Lehman College, City University of New York, offers two online counseling programs here: the master of science in education in school counseling and the master of science in clinical mental health counseling. Both programs are designed for students who want graduate-level counseling training in an urban setting.

These programs share a strong focus on equity, social justice, reflective practice, and service to diverse communities. They include coursework, field experience, and training in counseling theory, assessment, multicultural counseling, leadership, advocacy, and research.

The MSEd in school counseling is a 60-credit, part-time, year-round, three-year program. It prepares students for school counseling roles in K-12 settings and includes courses such as professional identity in school counseling; counseling theories and techniques; multicultural and social justice counseling; group counseling; sexuality counseling in schools and families; bilingual counseling in schools and families; brief counseling with children and adolescents; and an internship in K-12 school counseling.

The MS in clinical mental health counseling is a full-time, cohort-based, 60-credit program completed over two years. It prepares students for New York State licensure and careers in private practice, community agencies, healthcare, and related settings. Important courses include foundations of mental health counseling; psychopathology in counseling; counseling research, program development, and evaluation; practicum in clinical mental health counseling; and internship in clinical mental health counseling.

Admission requirements for both programs include a completed bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum 3.0 GPA, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, a current resume, essays, and an interview. The school counseling program also requires a group interview and, for international applicants, TOEFL. The clinical mental health counseling program also requires a writing assessment and TOEFL for applicants whose first language is not English.
