Lubbock Christian University Online MS in Mental Health Counseling
Lubbock Christian University offers one online counseling program: the master of science in mental health counseling with a clinical mental health counseling emphasis. This program prepares students to serve in clinical settings such as mental health agencies, social services, and private practice.
The program is delivered online and is designed to meet the academic requirements for licensure as a professional counselor in Texas and other states. It emphasizes faith integration, ethical practice, cultural competence, and evidence-based counseling skills. Graduates are prepared for roles in community mental health, pastoral counseling, drug and alcohol counseling, trauma counseling, college counseling, and relationship counseling.
The MS in mental health counseling is a 60-credit program that includes coursework in counseling theory and practice, psychopathology, assessment, research, ethics, crisis and trauma counseling, addictions, and group counseling. Important courses include foundations of clinical practice; lifespan, development, and human sexuality; counseling theory and practice; psychopathology of individuals and families; advanced psychopathology, diagnosis, and treatment planning; crisis and trauma counseling; and addictions. The program also includes a clinical mental health counseling practicum, two clinical mental health counseling internships, and a CMHC exam.
Admission requires submission of an application to the LCU Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences, payment of the application fee, a signed financial responsibility agreement, official transcripts from all accredited institutions showing a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA, a professional resume, three letters of recommendation (at least one from a current supervisor), a written personal statement, a FERPA form, and an interview with behavioral sciences faculty. Applications are due one month before the start of the semester, and the program offers rolling admissions for Fall, Spring, and Summer. The GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.
Lubbock Christian University is a private Christian university associated with the Churches of Christ and located in Lubbock, Texas. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The clinical mental health counseling program is working toward CACREP accreditation and requires proficiency in the eight CACREP counseling areas.
