Malone University Online Counseling Programs
Malone University offers two fully online master’s counseling programs: the master of arts in education (MAEd) in clinical mental health counseling and the master of arts in education (MAEd) in school counseling. Both programs are designed for students who want to become licensed professional counselors and serve others with compassion and Christian faith.
Both programs are fully online, take two to three and a half years to complete, and require 60 credits. Classes start every eight weeks, and coursework is offered in synchronous and asynchronous formats to fit busy schedules. Each program includes nine semester hours of clinical experience with practicum and two internships, and both prepare graduates for licensure exams and professional practice. Students also benefit from faculty support, meaningful field placements, and a Christ-centered approach that integrates faith with counseling practice.
The MAEd in clinical mental health counseling prepares students to work in agency and professional settings supporting individuals, families, and communities. Important courses include foundations of clinical mental health counseling; diagnosis of mental disorders; treatment methods in clinical mental health counseling; and trauma counseling and crisis intervention. The program includes electives such as spirituality and religion in counseling; social justice counseling; and counseling lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex populations. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in Ohio.
The MAEd in school counseling prepares students to support K-12 students’ academic, emotional, and social development. Important courses include foundations of school counseling; school counseling and special education; consultation and advocacy in school counseling; and program development and coordination in school counseling. The program aligns with Ohio Department of Education requirements and prepares graduates to take the Ohio Assessments for Educators School Counselor Test for licensure as a Professional Pupil Services school counselor in Ohio.
Admission to Malone’s counseling programs requires a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, completion of a counseling program supplement, two personal reference forms, and a satisfactory admissions interview. Applicants must also complete an admissions assessment that evaluates intrapersonal skills, interpersonal skills, clinical astuteness, and professional characteristics and receive a recommendation from the Counseling and Human Development core faculty. Applicants with a GPA between 2.75 and 3.0 may be considered for conditional admission and can achieve regular admission after completing 12 semester hours with a 3.0 GPA.
Malone University is a private Christian university in Canton, Ohio, founded in 1892. The university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and both the MAEd in clinical mental health counseling and the MAEd in school counseling are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
