Mid-America Christian University Online Counseling Programs
Mid-America Christian University offers six online counseling options: an addiction and substance abuse counseling certificate, four master of science (MS) in counseling tracks in addiction and substance abuse, applied behavioral science, clinical mental health, and marital, couples, and family therapy, and a master of education (MEd) in school counseling. The counseling programs are designed for students who want Christian-based preparation for work in counseling, mental health, family therapy, addiction treatment, or school settings.
Across the programs, MACU emphasizes practical learning, scholarly research, and a Christian perspective. Most of the counseling courses are offered in a flexible format for working adults, with one six-week course at a time in the master’s programs. The school also highlights fieldwork, supervised clinical experience, and preparation for professional work and ministry settings. The MEd in school counseling is also designed to be flexible, with online study or one night a week on campus.
The 21-credit addiction and substance abuse counseling certificate is for students who already hold a master’s degree in a counseling-related field and want to qualify for LADC or LADC/MH licensure. Important courses include alcohol and drug addiction; addiction in the family and assessment theory; pharmacology of drugs of abuse; and addictions and substance abuse counseling therapy and techniques. The program includes practicum and internship hours, and it is built for students seeking advanced training in addiction counseling.
The MS in counseling with an emphasis in addiction and substance abuse prepares students for work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, nonprofits, courts, and police departments. Important courses include psychopathology; alcohol and drug addiction; addiction in the family and assessment theory; pharmacology of drugs of abuse; and addictions and substance abuse counseling therapy and techniques. This track leads to a licensure degree option and is designed for students who want to work in addiction counseling and related settings.
The MS in counseling with an emphasis in applied behavioral science is a non-licensure program for students seeking leadership roles in mental health and human services. Important courses include psychopathology; theories of counseling and psychotherapy; individual counseling and psychotherapy techniques; and intervention of individuals and families in crisis and trauma. Students who complete the 36-credit core may graduate with the non-licensure applied behavioral science emphasis.
The MS in counseling with an emphasis in clinical mental health counseling prepares students to become Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC). Important courses include tests and measurement; child adolescent psychopathology and counseling; clinical psychopharmacology in counseling; marital and family treatment techniques; and advanced counseling and psychotherapy techniques. The program includes licensure-related options and may require additional courses depending on state licensure needs.
The MS in counseling with an emphasis in marital, couples, and family therapy prepares students to become Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs). Important courses include clinical issues of aging, death and dying; human sexuality in counseling; psychology of interpersonal communication and relationships; marital and family treatment techniques; and internship. The program focuses on helping students support individuals, couples, and families with relational and behavioral challenges.
The MEd in school counseling prepares educators to provide academic and social-emotional support to students in P-12 settings. Important courses include introduction to counseling and guidance; theories of counseling and psychotherapy; career counseling and development; intervention strategies: academic and learning; and school counseling practicum capstone. The 30-credit program includes supervised practicum experience and supports students pursuing school counseling certification.
Admission to the MS in counseling programs requires a bachelor’s degree, state residency, and a 3.0 GPA, or 2.75 if the student has nine hours of psychological-based coursework. Admission to the addiction and substance abuse counseling certificate requires a master’s degree that qualifies for LPC or LMFT licensure, good standing, and a deficiency letter from the state. Admission to the MEd in school counseling requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, a 2.75 GPA in degree-applicable coursework or 3.0 in the last 60 credits, and an original OSBI background check.
