Midwestern State University Master’s in Clinical & School Counseling
Midwestern State University offers two online counseling programs: a master of arts in clinical mental health counseling and a master of arts in clinical mental health counseling with a concentration in school counseling. Both programs are designed for students seeking professional training in counseling, with options for fully online or hybrid delivery.
Both programs are fully online and digitally delivered, with courses offered entirely online or as hybrid courses that combine online work with Saturday classes. The programs are designed to fit around busy work schedules, and students can attend classes in formats that support their schedules. The clinical mental health track is 60 credits, while the clinical mental health with a concentration in school counseling track is 63 credits. Both programs prepare students to take the National Counselor Examination and apply for a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate License.
The clinical mental health, master of arts, is a 60-credit program that prepares students to become licensed professional counselors who work in private practice, community agencies, hospitals, and other professional settings. Important courses include professional orientation and ethics; introduction to counseling; theories and techniques of counseling; assessment; diagnosis and treatment planning; counseling individuals through crisis, grief, and trauma; and substance abuse counseling. The program includes a practicum and two graduate internship courses.
The clinical mental health with a concentration in school counseling, master of arts, is a 63-credit program that prepares students to provide counseling services in school settings. Students learn to provide direct counseling to students, consult with parents, teachers, and administrators, act as a liaison between schools and outside agencies, and facilitate classroom guidance activities. Important concentration courses include introduction to school counseling; comprehensive school counseling services; counseling individual children; and a practicum for school counseling. Texas Counselor certification requires an approved master’s degree, two years of teaching experience, a passing score on the TExES test, and a practicum in a school setting. Students must also pass a comprehensive exam as a program completion requirement.
Admission to the clinical mental health program requires an application to McAda Graduate School, an application fee, official transcripts with numeric GPA, a non-advanced certificate form, and three letters of recommendation. Admission to the clinical mental health with a concentration in school counseling program requires an application to McAda Graduate School, an application fee, official transcripts with numeric GPA, Texas Teacher Certification, a teaching service record, an advanced program application, an essay, and three letters of recommendation. Application deadlines for domestic applicants are August 1 for Fall and December 1 for Spring.
