Minnesota State University Moorhead Online Counseling Programs

Minnesota State University Moorhead offers three online graduate certificate options in counseling: addiction counseling, professional counseling, and school counseling. These programs are designed for students seeking flexible graduate training with clear paths to licensure in counseling-related fields.

All three certificates are built for students who already hold a master’s degree in counseling or a related field. Each program is offered through MSUM’s online format, and the coursework is designed to meet state licensure needs in Minnesota and North Dakota. The certificates also emphasize practical training, supervision, and professional preparation for counseling work in different settings.

The addiction counseling graduate certificate is open only to graduates of MSUM’s MS in counseling program. It prepares students for licensure as addiction counselors in Minnesota and North Dakota. Important courses include theories of counseling; introduction to substance use disorders and addictive behaviors; psychopharmacology for the helping professions; practicum in addiction counseling; and internship in addiction counseling. The program focuses on addiction theory, assessment, intervention, and recovery support.

The professional counseling graduate certificate is also limited to MSUM MS in counseling graduates and is intended to lead to state licensure. Important courses include administration of clinical mental health services and clinical counseling skills; clinical appraisal and diagnosis, intervention and treatment planning; clinical supervision and ethics; practicum in clinical mental health counseling; and internship in clinical mental health counseling. The program is designed for students with a counseling background who need additional coursework for licensure.

The school counseling graduate certificate is available only to MSUM MS in counseling graduates and is designed to lead to school counseling licensure. Important courses include the organization and administration of school counseling programs; school counseling classroom and program management; counseling children, adolescents, and families; an internship in school counseling; and a practicum in school counseling. Students without a North Dakota teaching license must also complete additional education courses and Praxis requirements.

Admission to all three certificates is limited to graduates of Minnesota State University Moorhead’s MS in counseling program. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, a master’s degree in counseling, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or at least 3.25 in the last 30 semester credits. The application process includes a GradCAS application, a current resume, unofficial transcripts, a career goals essay, an informational interview, and a criminal background check. International students are not eligible for any of the three graduate certificates.
