Morehead State University Online Master’s in School Counseling
Morehead State University offers an online master of arts in counseling with a focus on school counseling. This program provides certification for school counseling.
The MA in counseling is a 100 percent online program requiring 36 credits. Students can complete the degree in 18 months. The program delivers courses in eight-week lengths, allowing students to take four courses per 16-week semester while working a full-time job. Most courses are eight weeks long, which lets students take two courses at a time.
Courses are offered once per academic year. When students begin the program in the fall semester, they take courses within a cohort. This allows them to share their educational experiences with the same group of peers during their entire tenure in the program. Upon completion, students are eligible for Provisional Kentucky School Counselor certification and Rank II status.
The MA in counseling with a focus on school counseling program equips students with core knowledge and clinical skills to enter the school counseling profession. Students learn major contemporary theories that form the foundation for the current practice of professional counseling. The curriculum covers school counselor organization, responsibilities, best practices, and roles, adhering to national and state professional standards.
Key courses in the program include philosophy and practice of school counseling; theories of counseling; group counseling; and legal and ethical issues in counseling. Students also complete a practicum in counseling and learn practices and techniques in counseling. The program emphasizes psycho-educational assessment theory and practice along with clinical assessment and diagnosis.
Admission to graduate study at Morehead State University requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a baccalaureate degree or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
