NCCU Online Master’s in Counseling Programs | North Carolina
North Carolina Central University is a public historically Black university offering three online master’s programs in counseling. These include a master of arts degree in career counseling, a master of arts degree in clinical mental health counseling, and a master of arts degree in school counseling.
All three programs are offered and accredited as 100 percent online programs, with some synchronous and asynchronous courses. Every student completes 700 hours of supervised field experience before graduating. The programs include three required residencies: an orientation residency completed online, plus two on-campus residencies in Durham, NC, for group counseling and pre-practicum in counseling.
The MA in career counseling is a 60-credit program and is the only CACREP online career program in the nation. It prepares career development professionals to work with people of all ages in universities, colleges, K-12 public and private schools, community colleges, private companies, and nonprofit organizations. Key courses include ethical and professional orientation to counseling; theories and techniques of counseling; vocational theory and career development; multicultural and gender issues in counseling; and advanced career counseling, among others.
The MA in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit program that prepares students to work in private, non-profit, and other mental health settings. The curriculum prepares students for application as licensed professional counselors in North Carolina. The program is recognized as a Criteria C school for licensure as a clinical addictions specialist (LCAS), and three additional courses are required for LCAS licensure. Key courses include introduction to clinical mental health counseling; psychosocial development and behavioral dynamics; crisis, trauma, and grief counseling; diagnosis, assessment, and psychopathology; introduction to family counseling; and introduction to addiction counseling.
The MA in school counseling is a 60-credit program that prepares students for K-12 licensure in North Carolina to practice as professional school counselors. Graduates demonstrate the professional knowledge, skills, and practices necessary to promote the career, social, and academic development of all K-12 students. Students must pass the Praxis II specialty test in school counseling to be licensed by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Key courses include introduction to school counseling; counseling children and adolescents; counseling children with special needs; advanced school counseling; psychosocial development and behavioral dynamics; counseling children with special needs; and clinical interventions in events of crisis, grief, and trauma.
Admission requirements are the same for all three programs. Applicants need a preferred GPA of 3.0, a bachelor’s degree, GRE scores, two letters of recommendation, an application essay, and official transcripts from all schools attended. The application deadline is February 1st for fall term admission only.
North Carolina Central University is located in Durham, North Carolina. It is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). All three counseling programs are fully accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and are endorsed members of the International Registry of Counselor Education Programs (IRCEP).
