NC State (NCSU) Online Counseling Programs
North Carolina State University (NCSU or NC State) is a public land-grant research university in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. It offers an online graduate certificate in counselor education, a master of education (MEd) in clinical mental health counseling, and a master of education (MEd) in school counseling.
All three programs are offered online and are designed to support students preparing for counseling and related professional roles. The university emphasizes access, community, equality, and service, and the programs include both coursework and field experiences. Students in these programs also benefit from flexible scheduling and a strong focus on counseling practice, multicultural understanding, and professional growth.
The graduate certificate in counselor education is a 13-credit online program for administrators, schoolteachers, advisors, support staff, human service workers, and tutors. It includes courses such as orientation to professional counseling, identity, and ethics; multicultural lifespan development; multicultural counseling; and theories and techniques of counseling. The certificate can be completed full-time in two semesters or part-time in about one year.
The MEd in clinical mental health counseling is a three-year, part-time online cohort program. It prepares students for professional licensure in North Carolina and includes courses such as career counseling and development; introduction to clinical mental health counseling; psychodiagnosis and assessment in counseling; techniques in counseling; and internship in clinical mental health counseling. Students also complete practicum and internship field experiences in North Carolina.
The MEd in school counseling is also a three-year, part-time online cohort program. It prepares students for K-12 school counselor licensure in North Carolina and includes courses such as orientation to professional counseling, identity, and ethics; multicultural counseling; psychodiagnosis and assessment in counseling; practicum in counseling; and internship in school counseling. Students must also complete in-person field experiences in North Carolina K-12 public schools and meet the state-required Praxis score.
Admission requirements vary by program. The graduate certificate in counselor education requires either an undergraduate degree with a 3.0 GPA in the major or the last 60 credits, or a master’s degree. The MEd in clinical mental health counseling and the MEd in school counseling both require a completed online application, departmental application form, resume, non-refundable application fee, three recommendations, official transcripts, and English proficiency for international students. All programs also require students to be able to complete required field experiences in North Carolina, and admissions are based on academic record, recommendations, leadership, work experience, and interview selection.
