Students in the bridge program study the nine required content areas for New York State licensure. These include human growth and development; social and cultural diversity; counseling theory and practice; psychopathologies; group work; career development; counseling assessment; research and program evaluation; and foundations of CMHC and ethics. The program also requires a 600-hour supervised internship in mental health counseling. Some common courses include foundations of mental health counseling and ethics; lifespan and human development; assessment in counseling; social and cultural diversity; and psychopathologies.
The program is open to applicants with a graduate GPA of 3.0 and an earned master’s degree in a closely related field. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, a statement of intent, official transcripts, a resume, and participate in an interview. Students with degrees earned outside the United States or Canada must also submit a degree evaluation, and applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of language proficiency. Niagara University uses rolling admissions and typically notifies students of decisions in three to four weeks.
