NYIT Online Mental Health Counseling Programs

New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) is a private university in New York City, New York. It offers an online advanced certificate in mental health counseling and an online master of science program in mental health counseling.

Both programs focus on preparing students for licensure and professional practice in mental health counseling. They emphasize cultural sensitivity, technology, social justice, and hands-on training. Students also gain experience through fieldwork and supervised clinical learning.

The advanced certificate in mental health counseling is a 15-credit program for certified school counselors and other mental health professionals who need the extra coursework for licensure in New York State. The curriculum includes theories of psychopathology; clinical assessment; advanced counseling and psychotherapy techniques; and internships. It is designed to help students move toward the licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) credential.

The master of science in mental health counseling is a fully online 60-credit program with a 700-hour practicum and internship experience. Students study human development; foundations of counseling; addictions counseling: assessment, treatment, and prevention; group counseling and psychotherapy; multicultural issues in counseling and human relations; and legal, ethical, and professional issues in counseling. The program prepares students to become licensed mental health counselors and work with diverse clients in a variety of settings.

Admission requirements vary by program. The advanced certificate requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, current certification or licensure in counseling or a related field, application materials, transcripts, proof of degree, and English proficiency for international students. The master’s program requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0, a graduate application, a personal essay, three letters of reference, and a face-to-face interview. Applicants with a GPA between 2.85 and 2.99 may be accepted with conditions.

Both programs use rolling or seasonal admission schedules, and transfer credit may be accepted under specific conditions for the master’s program.
