Ohio University Online MEd in Counselor Education
Ohio University offers a fully online master of education (MEd) in counselor education with a school counseling specialization through the Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education. This 60-credit program is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree in any field, including K-12 professionals seeking career advancement or a shift to school counseling. It prepares graduates to lead, serve, and support students in diverse school settings through quality instruction, supervised experience, and a focus on ethical practice, diversity, inclusion, and advocacy.
The program emphasizes foundational counseling skills, real-world application, and professional growth, typically completed in five to six semesters of full-time study. Core coursework covers counseling foundations, theory and techniques, appraisal, human development, research methods, group counseling, and multicultural competencies, helping students develop skills in individual and group settings, social justice advocacy, ethical obligations, and a personal counseling philosophy. All students complete a 100-hour practicum and 600-hour internship under supervision, with the department assisting in securing local field placements.
The school counseling specialization builds on core courses with training tailored for K-12 environments. Required courses include professional school counseling and counseling children and adolescents, plus four hours of approved electives. Key elements like counseling internship and counseling practicum ensure hands-on preparation for licensure as a school counselor. Expert faculty provide dedicated mentorship to support student success.
Admission to the online MEd in counselor education with a school counseling specialization program requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, official transcripts showing a GPA of 2.9 or higher (applicants below 2.9 may submit GRE verbal and quantitative scores and address academic performance in their personal statement), two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, a resume or CV detailing education and work experience, and proof of English proficiency if applicable.
