Oklahoma City University offers an online master of education (MEd) in clinical mental health counseling. The program is designed to prepare students for state licensure and a counseling career.
The program is fully online and includes 60 credits, with no waitlist. It uses a practitioner wellness model and combines flexible remote learning with clinical skills labs, practicum, and internship experiences. Students can complete the degree in as few as two years with full-time enrollment, three years with blended full-time and part-time enrollment, or four years with part-time enrollment.

The MEd in clinical mental health counseling is designed to prepare students for licensure and professional counseling practice. Important areas of study include evidence-based counseling theories; assessment; multiculturalism and diversity; advanced evidence-based techniques; biological bases of behavior and health; practicum; and internship. The program also uses remote clinical skills labs to help students practice counseling techniques in a flexible online setting.
The degree is structured to support students who want to work as professional counselors in settings such as counseling centers, youth and guidance centers, mental health clinics, human service agencies, university counseling centers, drug and alcohol treatment facilities, religious counseling centers, abuse shelters, and private practice. It also focuses on counseling ethics, cultural competence, crisis intervention, research methods, and psychotherapeutic intervention skills.
Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or its foreign equivalent. Applicants must have a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0, submit official transcripts, a resume or CV, a statement of purpose, two recommendation letters, and proof of strong written and oral English communication skills. A suitable personality for helping and crisis intervention work is also required, and an interview may be requested.
If the bachelor’s degree is more than five years old, a significant sample of former scholarship may be submitted instead of one instructor letter, and the remaining recommendation may come from a supervisory person.
