Portland State University Post-Master’s School Counseling Certificate
Portland State University offers a post master’s school counseling certificate for students who want to move into school counseling. The program is designed for people with a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or social work who want to work in K-12 school settings.
The certificate is built around flexible study and practical school-based training. Students can take courses online, in person, or in a hybrid format, and the program is self-paced. It includes school counseling internships, an action research project, and a professional practice portfolio, with some courses available for waiver based on previous graduate learning.
The program prepares students to become change agents and advocates in schools. It focuses on equity, social justice, trauma-informed practice, developmentally responsive prevention and intervention, and strong links between theory, research, and practice. Admission requires a completed master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or social work that includes a clinical practicum in individual and group counseling skills. Applicants must submit unofficial transcripts, English language proficiency, a resume, a statement of purpose, and recommendations.
