Rivier University Online Master’s in Counseling Programs
Rivier University offers online graduate counseling programs for students who want flexible professional training. The programs covered here are the master of education (MEd) in school counseling and the master of arts (MA) in clinical mental health counseling.
Both programs use a low-residency format with online coursework and required on-campus weekends. They are designed to blend academic study with practical experience, and both include residency, practicum, and internship-based learning. Rivier also offers courses in seven- and 14-week terms, which give students a more flexible pace.
The MEd in school counseling is a 57-credit program that prepares students to support the emotional and educational growth of K-12 students. Important courses include basic human interaction; clinical counseling theories; group counseling; professional issues in school counseling; psychotherapy for children; and collaboration and intervention. The program also includes a counseling practicum, two internships in school counseling, and two counseling residencies.
The MA in clinical mental health counseling is a 63-credit program that prepares students for work in clinical counseling settings. Important courses include clinical counseling theories; ethics of clinical counseling; testing and assessment; addictive behaviors; marriage and family therapy; and advanced psychology of human development. The program includes a one-year 700-hour internship and follows New Hampshire standards for licensure as a clinical mental health counselor.
Admission is rolling for graduate candidates, and new terms begin in the fall, spring, and summer. Standardized test scores are not required, and there is no application fee. Applicants must submit an application and official transcripts from each institution where they received undergraduate or graduate course credit, and transcripts from schools outside the United States must receive a course-by-course evaluation from an approved credential evaluation agency.
Rivier University is a private Catholic university located in Nashua, New Hampshire. It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and approved by the New Hampshire Department of Education (NHED). The MA in clinical mental health counseling is in compliance with the New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification guidelines, and the MEd in school counseling is fully approved for licensure by the NHED.
