St. Mary’s University of Minnesota Online Counseling Programs

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota offers online counseling programs, including the master of arts in counseling and psychological services, the online graduate certificate in addiction studies, and a dual-track option that combines both.

The programs are built around flexible online learning, practical experience, and a Lasallian Catholic mission that emphasizes service, respect, and purpose. The counseling and psychological services degree includes practicum training, and the addiction studies certificate also includes supervised field experience. The dual-track option lets students combine both programs for broader career preparation.

The master of arts in counseling and psychological services is a 60-credit program that prepares students for counseling careers and Minnesota licensure as an LPC or LPCC. Important courses include counseling theory and technique; psychopathology; multicultural counseling; psychological assessment; ethics and professional issues; introduction to supervision and consultation; and statistical techniques and research methods. The program includes a 700-hour practicum and is offered online through the Minneapolis campus.

The online graduate certificate in addiction studies is a 25-credit program that prepares students to work with chemical dependency and co-occurring concerns. Important courses include historical and contemporary foundations of addiction theories; psychopharmacology and psychophysiology in addiction disorders; diagnosis and assessment of co-occurring disorders; and individual and group counseling and case management. The program also includes an 880-hour practicum and is designed to meet Minnesota licensure requirements for LADC.

The dual-track option combines the counseling and psychological services degree with the addiction studies certificate. It is designed for students who want training in both mental health counseling and addiction studies, and it includes coursework from both programs along with a combined practicum experience.

Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 2.75, and supporting application materials such as an essay, transcript, resume, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants without a psychology degree must complete a psychology course, and some applicants may also need prerequisite courses for the addiction studies certificate. GMAT and GRE scores are not required.

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is a private Catholic university located in Winona and Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and the programs are designed to support Minnesota licensure and professional practice.
