SDSU Online Master’s in Counseling Programs

San Diego State University is a public research university that offers the master of arts in education in counseling and the online master of science in rehabilitation counseling.

The counseling programs are designed for students who want flexible graduate study with practical training. The MA in education in counseling is a hybrid program with mostly online coursework and a small number of face-to-face workshops. The rehabilitation counseling program is fully online and is built for students who want distance learning through a cohort model.

The MA in education in counseling is a 30-credit program that focuses on counseling skills, trauma-informed care, restorative practices, and culturally responsive work. Important courses include restorative practices and conflict transformation; trauma-informed care in multicultural contexts; counseling skills laboratory; group counseling lab; and research methods of inquiry. This program is not a licensure track and does not prepare students for Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) certification.

The online MS in rehabilitation counseling is a 60-credit program that prepares students to work with people with physical, emotional, and cognitive disabilities. Important courses include rehabilitation foundations; medical and psychological aspects of disability; theory and process of counseling; case management and rehabilitation services; and internship in rehabilitation. The program is designed to support CRC certification and may help with licensure pathways depending on the state.

Admission for both programs requires a bachelor’s degree, and international students from non-English speaking countries need TOEFL results. The MA in Education in Counseling also asks for a personal statement, resume or CV, language background, unofficial and official transcripts, and letters of recommendation. The rehabilitation counseling program asks for the same main application materials.

San Diego State University is located in San Diego, California. It is regionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), and the rehabilitation counseling program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
