Saybrook University Online Counseling Programs
Saybrook University is a private university that offers a master of arts in counseling in clinical mental health counseling and a PhD in counselor education and supervision.
Both programs are built around Saybrook’s humanistic approach and use a hybrid online format with required in-person learning experiences. Students complete online coursework while also taking part in residential learning experiences in California. The counseling programs are designed to support professional growth, community learning, and social justice-focused practice.
The MA in counseling in clinical mental health counseling is a 60-credit program that takes about three years to complete. Important courses include basic counseling skills; counseling theories; psychopathology and diagnosis; cultural humility and responsiveness; relationship and family intervention; advanced child and adolescent therapy; substance abuse and behavioral addictions; and two internships. The program also includes 700 hours of supervised field experience and prepares students for clinical counseling careers.
The PhD in counselor education and supervision is a 60-credit program that takes about four years to complete. Important courses include advanced theories and practice; supervision and consultation; leadership, advocacy, and ethics; research and publication seminar; introduction to counselor education; advanced qualitative research methods; community leadership and engagement; and dissertation work. The program prepares graduates for teaching, supervision, research, and leadership roles in counseling education.
Admission for the MA program requires a completed application, official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA or better, a resume or CV, a personal statement, and one letter of recommendation. Admission for the PhD program requires a completed application, official transcripts showing a master’s degree in counseling or a related field with a 3.0 GPA or better, a resume or CV, a personal statement, and two letters of recommendation. PhD applicants may also be invited to an interview.
Saybrook University is located in Pasadena, California.
