St. Catherine University Online MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling
St. Catherine University offers the online master of science in clinical mental health counseling for students who want to prepare for licensure as professional counselors. The program is designed for working adults and focuses on counseling skills, mental health support, and service to diverse communities.
The program combines online study with supervised practice and a residency experience. Students complete 60 credits, practicum and internship work, and skills-based learning with support from faculty. St. Kate’s also emphasizes social justice, equity, and inclusive care in its counseling training.
The master of science in clinical mental health counseling prepares students to work with individuals, families, groups, and couples across the lifespan. Important courses include professional orientation and ethical practice in counseling; lifespan development in counseling; career counseling in clinical mental health; research and program evaluation in clinical mental health counseling; case conceptualization, treatment planning, and intervention; and case management, advocacy, and consultation. Students also complete a 100-hour applied counseling practicum and a 600-hour professional internship.
The program also offers nine-credit microcredentials in areas such as couple and family counseling, trauma studies, counseling children and adolescents, multicultural counseling, holistic health, and addictions.
Students in this program learn through experiential coursework, simulation learning, and an AI client practice model that helps build counseling skills in real time. A residency is also required once a year in the summer on the St. Catherine campus in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The program is built to support adult learners, rural students, and others balancing school with work and family life.
Admission requires evidence of academic ability, motivation, and ethical intent to help others. To be considered for admission, applicants must have a completed bachelor’s or graduate degree from an institution that is accredited by one of the regional accrediting organizations. Applicants must submit a resume or vita, references, a one-page narrative, and proof of academic aptitude through either a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, a 3.3 graduate GPA, or an approved alternate path for applicants with a 2.75 to 3.0 GPA. The CASPER test, an interview, and English language scores may also be required for some applicants.
St. Catherine University is located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It is a private Catholic university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), and this counseling program is seeking CACREP accreditation.
