St. John’s University (NY) Post-Master’s School Counseling Certificate
St. John’s University offers the advanced certificate in school counseling bridge program for students who already hold a 60-credit master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. The program is designed to help students earn initial New York State certification in school counseling.
The program is flexible and combines online synchronous and asynchronous classes with fieldwork in K-12 school settings. Students complete three semesters of field work, including one 100-hour practicum and two 300-hour internships. The program begins in the spring semester only and is intended to prepare students for school counseling practice in real school settings.
The advanced certificate in school counseling bridge program focuses on practical school-based preparation. Important courses include consultation and evaluation in schools; practicum in school counseling; organization and administration of PPS; two internships in school counseling; and brief child and adolescent counseling. Students must complete field experience in both elementary and secondary settings during school day hours.
Admission to the program requires a completed 60-credit master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling that includes the eight CACREP core areas. Applicants also need a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and an interview with faculty. Students must also be able to complete daytime fieldwork in two separate K-12 settings during the program.
St. John’s University is located in Queens, New York City. It is a private Catholic university and is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
