SUNY Brockport School Counseling Advanced Certificate
State University of New York at Brockport offers the certificate of advanced study in school counseling for professionals who already hold a master’s degree in school counseling. The program is designed to help school counselors qualify for permanent certification in New York State.
The certificate is a 12-credit program delivered primarily online, with some elective courses available in person. Core courses focus on advanced skills in diagnosis and family systems counseling from a school counseling perspective. The program can be completed through a mix of online and classroom courses, and all required courses must be passed with a grade of B or higher.
The certificate of advanced study in school counseling prepares students for advanced practice and leadership in P-12 schools. Required courses include diagnosis and treatment planning in counseling and couples and family counseling. Electives include sexuality in counseling; neurology in counseling; leadership and advocacy; spirituality in the counseling process; K-12 student services; child-centered play therapy; and wellness and stress management. Students also develop skills in program design, assessment, advocacy, and data-driven decision-making for school counseling.
Admission requires an online graduate application with a written objective for entering the program, all undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation from an employer, a professor, and a character reference. Applicants must already hold a master’s degree in school counseling. Students must meet the university’s standards for graduate study and complete the program requirements to be eligible for the university’s recommendation for New York State permanent certification.
