SUNY New Paltz Trauma & Disaster Mental Health Advanced Certificate
State University of New York at New Paltz offers the advanced certificate in trauma and disaster mental health as a fully online program. The certificate is designed for practicing professionals and current graduate students who want focused training in trauma, crisis, and disaster-related mental health care.
The program is built around three core courses and two electives, for a total of 15 credits. Courses are taught by faculty affiliated with the Institute for Disaster Mental Health and by adjunct instructors with expertise in trauma treatment. The certificate can be completed in one semester if taken full-time, or extended to fit a student’s schedule.
The advanced certificate in trauma and disaster mental health prepares students to work with individuals, families, and communities affected by trauma and disasters. Required courses include disaster counseling and crisis intervention; evidence-based assessment and treatment of traumatic stress; and assessment and interventions with children, adolescents, and families. Electives include assisting veterans and first responders; assisting vulnerable populations; and grief, loss, and bereavement.
Admission requires one official copy of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and successful completion of a graduate-level counseling theories and skills course. Applicants must also submit a completed online application, a statement of professional goals, and a resume or CV if they already hold a master’s degree or higher. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the cohort is full.
