SUNY Oneonta Online School Counseling Programs
State University of New York at Oneonta offers two online pathways for school counseling: the master of science in education (MSEd) degree in school counselor K-12 and the certificate of advanced study (CAS) in school counselor. Both programs are designed to meet New York State requirements for school counselor certification and to prepare counselors for K-12 school settings.
The programs are offered through the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education and emphasize comprehensive developmental school counseling based on the ASCA National Model. Students learn to support academic, social, emotional, and career development for children and adolescents. Courses are delivered online with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous classes, and some instructors may require occasional on-campus meetings.
The MSEd in school counselor K-12 is a 48-credit program that leads to initial certification in school counseling. It can be completed in two years on a full-time basis and includes 100 hours of practicum and 600 hours of internship. Important courses include introduction to school counseling; counseling theories; counseling practicum; internship in school counseling; counseling services for children and adolescents; consultation in educational settings; measurement and appraisal for counselors; and career development. Students also complete an approved elective and gain hands-on experience in school districts.
The certificate of advanced study in school counseling provides 21 credits of study beyond the master’s degree and, when combined with the MSEd, satisfies New York state’s 60-credit requirement for permanent certification. The program includes courses such as consultation in educational settings; developmental counseling; teaching prosocial skills to youth; brief approaches to counseling; and internship in school counseling. It can be completed part-time within six calendar years, and students are encouraged to finish within five years to align with the provisional certificate validity.
Admission requirements differ by program. For the MSEd, applicants must submit a completed application and fee, an official transcript of a bachelor’s degree with at least nine credits in psychology or educational psychology, a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, two professional letters of recommendation, an essay about academic interests and career goals, and a personal interview. For the CAS, applicants must submit a graduate application and fee, an official transcript of an earned master’s degree, proof of NYS provisional certificate in school counseling, and two professional letters of recommendation, with a possible faculty interview. Non-matriculated students with a 48-credit school counseling master’s may take CAS courses toward permanent certification but cannot enroll in internship or independent study.
