Texas A&M University Kingsville offers online counseling programs for students who want to work in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, or related guidance services. The university offers a 60-credit master of science in clinical mental health counseling with three emphasis options: rural mental health counseling, sandtray therapy, and school counseling. It also offers a 48-credit master of science in counseling and guidance for students seeking Texas school counselor certification or a non-license degree.
The CACREP-accredited MS in clinical mental health counseling is delivered fully online and is designed to meet Texas requirements for professional counseling and includes coursework, field practicum, and internships. The program includes core courses such as field practicum for counselors; CMHC internship I and II; introduction to counseling and ethical practice; theories of counseling; research in counseling; career counseling; and group counseling techniques. Graduates may pursue the National Counselor Examination and the Texas Jurisprudence Examination before applying for an LPC Associate license in Texas.
The rural mental health counseling emphasis is available within the 60-credit clinical mental health counseling degree. It prepares students to support individuals and communities in rural settings. Important emphasis courses include community and rural mental health and rural leadership and advocacy.
The sandtray therapy emphasis is also available within the clinical mental health counseling degree. This option allows students to focus on sandtray-based counseling methods. Important courses include basic sandtray therapy and advanced sandtray therapy.
The school counseling emphasis is offered within the clinical mental health counseling degree and is designed for students interested in counseling roles in schools. Important courses include elementary guidance and counseling techniques and program development for school counselors. Students pursuing school counseling certification must complete the required educator preparation process in addition to graduate admission.
The MS in counseling and guidance is also offered online and consists of 48 semester credits. It is designed for students who want Texas school counselor certification or a non-license counseling degree. Students seeking school counselor certification must also complete the required educator preparation admission process and consult the school counselor program coordinator and certification office about current Texas requirements. Courses include multicultural counseling; counseling techniques; group counseling techniques; program development for school counselors; elementary guidance and counseling techniques; diagnosis and psychopharmacology; and crisis counseling.
Admission requirements for the counseling programs include a bachelor’s degree, an undergraduate transcript showing a minimum overall GPA of 3.25, a graduate transcript showing a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 for transfer and major change students, a purpose statement, and a resume. The programs do not require the GMAT or GRE. Admission is competitive and cohort-based, with a maximum of 30 students per admission cycle. Students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 throughout the program, and only final grades of A or B are accepted for the degree. The program accepts up to 15 transfer credits when the course syllabi meet CACREP standards.
