Texas A&M Victoria Online Master’s in Counseling Programs
Texas A&M University Victoria offers three graduate counseling programs: the MA in counseling psychology with a professional counselor concentration, the MS in clinical mental health counseling, and the MS in professional school counseling. These programs prepare students for counseling, psychotherapy, assessment, school counseling, and related professional roles in Texas.
The programs combine academic study with practical training. Students learn about counseling theories, human development, assessment, ethics, multicultural counseling, research, and professional practice. The professional school counseling and clinical mental health counseling programs also use a cohort model, with students admitted in the fall semester.
The MA in counseling psychology with the professional counselor concentration is a 60-credit online program. It prepares students to meet the academic requirements for the Texas Licensed Professional Counselor credential. Important courses include psychopathology; multicultural psychotherapy; techniques of psychotherapy; intellectual assessment; and crisis intervention. The program also includes supervised practicum experience and prepares students for counseling roles in private practice, mental health agencies, psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment centers, and university counseling centers.
The 60-credit MS in clinical mental health counseling prepares students for counseling positions in private counseling agencies, mental health centers, family counseling centers, drug abuse centers, child protective services, and other community settings. Important courses include assessment in counseling; theories of counseling; multicultural counseling; advanced psychopharmacology and psychopathology; and crisis and trauma response. Students also complete a practicum and two internships, along with specialty coursework in clinical mental health counseling and couples and family dynamics. The program requires students to pass the counselor preparation comprehensive examination before graduation.
The 60-credit MS in professional school counseling prepares students to work with students in public and private k-12 schools, as well as in community colleges and universities. Important courses include counseling in schools; advanced school counseling; counseling children and adolescents; and introduction to play therapy. Students also complete a practicum and two internships. The program prepares students for school counselor certification in Texas and includes training in student development, assessment, family collaboration, career support, and ethical school counseling practice.
Admission requirements vary by program. Applicants to the MA in counseling psychology must submit an application, official transcripts, a one- to two-page essay, one recommendation letter from a nonfamily source, and evidence of coursework in statistics, research methods, and psychopathology or abnormal psychology. The program information also has a GRE requirement and an interview with graduate faculty. Applicants to the MS in clinical mental health counseling must submit official transcripts, a statement of purpose, three recommendation forms, written responses to program questions, and complete a program interview. Applicants to the MS in professional school counseling must submit official transcripts, a statement of purpose, recommendation forms or letters, written responses to program questions, and complete a program interview. The GRE is not required for the two professional counseling programs.
