Texas Christian University (TCU) Online M.Ed. in School Counseling
Texas Christian University offers a fully online MEd in school counseling for students who want to pursue school counselor certification in Texas. The program is offered through TCU’s College of Education and prepares students to become reflective, innovative, ethical, and student-focused education professionals.
The MEd in school counseling is a 48-credit program delivered through synchronous and asynchronous online coursework. It uses a rigorous and strength-based approach and follows the requirements of the State Board of Educator Certification. The program does not offer provisional admission, and students must be fully admitted before beginning coursework. TCU does not accept transfer credits for this program.
The program combines counseling theory, practical skills, research, ethics, and supervised field experience. Important courses include assessment in counseling; helping relationships; counseling diverse populations; counseling theories and techniques; advanced counseling skills and ethics; and a practicum. Students also select nine hours from courses such as addictions counseling; DSM diagnosis and treatment; abnormal human development; introduction to marriage and family therapy; and strength-based theories.
Admission requires an online application, a strong academic record, three letters of recommendation, a brief essay describing career goals and interest in the program, and an official transcript from each college or university attended. School counseling applicants must also submit a statement on educational practice. Other requirements include a professional interview, an online criminal background check, and evidence of potential for professional leadership and advocacy. Optional GRE scores may be submitted, while non-native English speakers must provide official TOEFL scores.
To qualify for Texas school counselor certification, students must complete practicum hours at a school accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) or the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission (TEPSAC) and pass the TExES School Counselor exam. Out-of-state students may enroll, but they must complete their internship in Texas or at a Department of Defense school to qualify for Texas certification. TCU does not guarantee that the program meets certification requirements in other states.
