Texas Wesleyan University Online Counseling Programs
Texas Wesleyan University offers two online counseling pathways: the master of arts in professional counseling and the master of science in school counseling. The professional counseling program also offers an optional marriage and family therapy concentration for students who want additional preparation in that area.
The programs are designed to provide practical training, flexible online study, and preparation for professional counseling or school counseling careers. Courses are available during the fall, spring, and summer terms. The professional counseling program offers asynchronous coursework before practicum, with synchronous options available, while practicum and internship courses require weekly synchronous meetings.
The MA in professional counseling consists of 60 credits and includes at least 350 hours of practicum experience and six credits of internship. The program prepares students to apply for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential, although completing the degree does not guarantee licensure. Important courses include theories of counseling; multicultural counseling; advanced psychopathology; crisis intervention counseling; and counseling for substance-related and other addictive disorders. Students must also complete additional online courses such as counseling children and adolescents; group counseling; and community and clinical mental health administration. Graduates may work with adults, children, and adolescents in settings such as social services, schools, churches, and community agencies.
Students in the professional counseling program may choose the optional marriage and family therapy concentration, which requires 15 additional credits for a total of 75 credits. Important concentration courses include principles of couple therapy; strategy for intervention in family therapy; family systems; family of origin; and family therapy practicum.
The MS in school counseling consists of 48 credits and includes at least 160 hours of practicum experience. The program is offered online and prepares students to work in public, private, or charter schools from kindergarten through grade 12. Important courses include introduction to school counseling; programs in school counseling; career development and assessment; advanced counseling techniques; and practicum in school counseling. After completing the coursework and practicum and gaining two years of teaching experience, students can sit for the TExES certification exam.
The school counseling program offers optional concentrations in marriage and family therapy and professional counseling. The marriage and family therapy concentration requires 36 additional credits, while the professional counseling concentration requires 18 additional credits. These options allow students to expand their preparation beyond school counseling and pursue additional counseling career paths.
Admission requirements differ between the professional counseling and school counseling programs. Applicants to the master’s counseling programs must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Professional counseling applicants must have at least nine hours of psychology, counseling, or related coursework, including statistics and human development. Applicants must also meet one of the academic pathways, such as a 3.0 cumulative GPA or a 3.25 GPA over the last 60 hours, submit GRE scores, or present mental health casework or field experience with a minimum 2.5 GPA. School counseling applicants must demonstrate the academic, professional, emotional, and social qualities needed for the program and meet one of the listed academic or experience pathways. Selected applicants may also complete an interview with program faculty.
