Touro University Online Master’s in MFT & Counseling
Touro University Worldwide offers two online master’s degrees with five specializations. The MA in counseling has an addiction counseling specialization with a 60-credit base track and a 72-credit advanced topics track. The MA in marriage and family therapy offers a clinical track, a clinical track with additional counseling licensure coursework, and a non-clinical MFT studies track.
Both degrees use eight-week online courses. Students in the clinical tracks also complete supervised training, so online coursework does not remove the need to arrange clinical experience. The counseling degree focuses on substance use, recovery, and related mental health needs, while the marriage and family therapy degree focuses on individuals, couples, and families within their relationships and wider communities.
The 60-credit MA in counseling with addiction counseling combines 42 credits of core coursework with a 100-hour practicum and 600 hours of internship. The program covers assessment, treatment, and recovery for people affected by substance use and co-occurring conditions. Important courses include substance abuse and recovery for counselors; trauma and addiction counseling; advanced counseling theories in addiction; and principles of psychopharmacology. This base track is not approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) as a pathway to California Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) licensure.
The 72-credit MA in counseling advanced topics track adds four courses to the addiction counseling degree while retaining the same practicum and internship requirements. The added courses are advanced integrative approaches in counseling; crisis or trauma response and interventions; human sexuality in counseling; and contemporary issues in addiction counseling. Students seeking California LPCC licensure must choose this track because its educational requirements are approved by the California BBS.
The 72-credit MA in marriage and family therapy clinical track combines 54 credits of coursework with 18 credits of practicum. Important courses include couples counseling; child-focused family therapy; development within the family life cycle; and treatment of trauma in families.
Students who also want to pursue the California LPCC pathway can add the counseling licensure track to the clinical marriage and family therapy track. This option adds 10 credits in counseling theory; advanced counseling theories and techniques; lifestyle and career development counseling; and spousal or partner abuse detection and intervention. The program is approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS).
The 54-credit MA in marriage and family therapy MFT studies track is a non-clinical option for students who want to study family systems and relationships without preparing for therapy licensure. It includes academic marriage and family therapy coursework and a capstone, but no practicum or supervised clinical hours. This track does not lead to clinical licensure.
Admission requirements for both degrees begin with either an accredited bachelor’s degree and a minimum 2.5 GPA or good standing as a graduate transfer student with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Applicants must submit an application and official transcripts from all institutions attended. GRE or GMAT scores are not required for admission.
Touro University Worldwide is a nonprofit university headquartered in Los Alamitos, California, and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Within the marriage and family therapy degree, only the clinical marriage and family therapy track is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), with show cause status.

Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. Rates may change, so please check here for the latest tuition information. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students. “Resident” and “non-resident” refer to the student’s school-recognized state residency status. Tuition number represents the cost of tuition for the entire program, not per semester or year. Estimated total tuition does not include additional fees.
