Texas Tech University Online Master’s in Counseling Programs

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center offers three online counseling programs through its School of Health Professions: the MS in clinical mental health counseling, the MS in addiction counseling, and the MS in clinical rehabilitation counseling. Each program combines online coursework with practical clinical training and focuses on serving diverse communities, including rural populations.

All three programs include 60 credits and are designed to prepare entry-level counselors for professional practice. Their curriculum combines core counseling courses, specialty courses, experiential coursework, a practicum, and an internship. Students develop skills in counseling theory, human development, assessment, multicultural counseling, research, ethics, and evidence-based practice. The program also includes training in telehealth, and students complete clinical experiences under professional supervision.

The MS in clinical mental health counseling prepares students to support individuals and families experiencing mental and emotional disorders. The program can be completed in about two years and includes 12 credits of practicum and internship experience. Important courses include psychopathology and diagnosis; multicultural counseling; assessment; crisis counseling; psychopharmacology for mental health; and couples, marriage, and family counseling methods. Graduates may pursue the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential and apply for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure in many states. Graduates are also eligible for the Board Certified Telemental Health Provider (BC-THM) credential.

The MS in addiction counseling prepares students to work with people experiencing substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and related health concerns. The program can be completed in about two years and includes addiction-focused clinical experiences. Important courses include addictions counseling; advanced addiction counseling; neurobiology of addiction; psychopathology and diagnosis; and foundations of addiction counseling and ethical development. Graduates receive a certificate in telehealth and may pursue the National Counselor Examination (NCE) for licensure and certification, the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential, and professional counseling licensure (LPC) in many states.

The MS in clinical rehabilitation counseling is a fully online program that prepares students to support people with physical and psychiatric disabilities, social disabilities, and chronic conditions. The program usually takes two to three years and includes a practicum and internship under the supervision of an experienced professional. Important courses include medical aspects of disability; psychosocial aspects of disability; assessment; career counseling; group counseling techniques; and foundations of rehabilitation and ethical development. Graduates may pursue the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Examination (CRCE), the National Counselor Examination (NCE) for licensure and certification, the National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential, and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure in most states.

Admission requirements vary slightly by program. All three programs require a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a resume, an essay, recommendation letters, and official English proficiency evidence for international applications. The clinical mental health counseling program requires a minimum 3.0 GPA, while the addiction counseling and clinical rehabilitation counseling programs generally require a minimum 2.7 GPA. The GRE is not required for any program, but clinical rehabilitation counseling applicants must complete a criminal background check before enrollment.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is based in Lubbock, Texas, with additional campuses in Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas, and the Permian Basin. The institution is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). All three programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
