University of Bridgeport (Connecticut) Online Counseling Programs

The University of Bridgeport offers two online counseling programs through its Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences within the College of Science and Society: the 60-credit master of science in clinical mental health counseling and the counseling certificate of advanced study. The master’s program prepares students for clinical mental health counseling careers, while the certificate is designed for professionals who already hold a relevant master’s degree and need additional preparation for Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure.

The master’s program is available fully online with synchronous or asynchronous study and can be completed in as few as two years full-time or three years part-time. Students complete a 100-hour practicum and two 300-hour internships for 700 total fieldwork hours.

The MS in clinical mental health counseling prepares students to support diverse communities through evidence-based counseling strategies. Important courses include counseling theories; clinical skills for mental health counseling; strategies and techniques of counseling; and addictions and treatment. Students also study trauma, appraisal procedures, career development, group process, and human development. The program prepares graduates to sit for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) and pursue post-graduate supervised experience.

The counseling certificate of advanced study is designed for students who already hold a master’s degree in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or human services. The number of credits required depends on the student’s previous academic background. Depending on their needs, students may complete a 100-hour practicum and two 300-hour internships to develop clinical skills and meet licensure requirements.

Admission to the MS program requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or recognized international institution, a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, and nine undergraduate psychology credits. Applicants must also demonstrate volunteer or work experience in social service agencies, mental health professions, or substance use intervention sites. Required materials include an application, official transcripts, a resume, and an interview. Certificate applicants must submit an application, an official transcript showing a qualifying master’s degree, a resume, and an interview.

The University of Bridgeport is a private university in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and is institutionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). Its MS in clinical mental health counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
