University of Central Arkansas Online MS in School Counseling
The University of Central Arkansas offers a fully online master of science in school counseling with two tracks: the 45-credit add-on license track and the 48-credit initial license track.
The program prepares students to become professional K-12 school counselors in private and public educational institutions. The program uses a combination of face-to-face sessions through video conferencing software and asynchronous sessions in which students work independently. Students in both tracks complete practicum and internship requirements at the University of Central Arkansas.
The add-on license track is intended for candidates who hold a valid Arkansas teaching license and want to add school counseling licensure to their teaching license. Important courses include foundations of school counseling; lifespan development for school counselors; career guidance for school counselors; and school counseling intervention strategies.
The initial license track is designed for candidates who do not hold a valid Arkansas teaching license. In addition to the core school counseling coursework, initial licensure candidates complete the counselors and schooling practices course. Other important courses include multicultural counseling in schools; school counselor as consultant; individual and group counseling in the K-20 education environment; and counseling theory in K-20 education.
Admission to both tracks requires general admission to the Graduate School, a school counseling application form, two professional references, a statement of intent, and a completed program recommendation by administrator form from the applicant’s principal or superintendent. Applicants may also be asked to submit evidence of professional accomplishments through letters of recommendation or personal interviews. Initial license track applicants must submit a complete Arkansas educator licensure system page showing background check clearance. Add-on license track applicants must submit a current Arkansas teaching license or a cleared background check if they are not currently teaching.
The University of Central Arkansas is a public university in Conway, Arkansas, United States, and was founded in 1907. The university is officially accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
